PVC Fences, long term solutions!
PVC or Vinyl Fences are rapidly gaining popularity
around the US. Long lasting PVC fences look good and are virtually
maintenance free.
Although PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) was first discovered in
the 1800’s, it wasn’t until 1926, when an Engineer working
for B.F. Goodrich developed a special manufacturing method
that its vast potential was unleashed. The early developers
of PVC discovered that by blending it with different materials
a more flexible and more easily processed material could be
manufactured. Very soon after that, PVC achieved widespread
commercial use.
Today Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) is used in virtually every
type of industry. Because of its low maintenance, good looks
and durability, vinyl is a popular alternative material for
products traditionally constructed of wood, such as fences,
siding and window frames.
Vinyl fence systems are an environmentally friendly alternative
to pressure treated wood. No harmful chemicals are released
into the air or absorbed into the ground from PVC. Arsenic
is widely used in the preservation of wood in a chemical compound
known as CCA (chromated copper arsenic). Numerous studies
have shown that potential exposure exists not from contact
with the wood, but from hand to mouth, making children the
most vulnerable to this hazard.
PVC’s popularity is due also in large part to its superior
performance over long periods of time. Its good looks, stability,
weather resistance, low maintenance, and long life have made
it a popular choice for homeowners and contractors around
the world.
PVC or Vinyl Fencing is installed much like a wood fence,
Posts are secured in the ground to support the rails, and
the panels are attached to the rails. However with PVC the
posts come from the factory with slots that allow the rails
to be inserted. The PVC fence virtually snaps into place,
no nails or screws that can someday rust or pop out are used.
A vinyl fence will initially cost a little more than a wood
fence to install, but vinyl requires virtually no maintenance
over its life. Unlike wood there’s no termite infestation
to worry about and you’ll never need to paint or stain it.
In addition the mildew problems with organic (wood) fencing
are greatly reduced. Mildew feeds on organic materials. Only
under very damp conditions over long periods of time will
mildew attach itself to any organic material stuck to your
fence. If mildew does develop on a PVC fence surface, it is
actually feeding off organic material that has become stuck
to the vinyl. If this occurs a mild solution of bleach and
water will easily wipe away the mildew.
Maintenance free, attractive, long lasting PVC fencing comes
in many different styles so you can match the look and feel
of the existing structures. Whether you require a livestock
fence, ornamental, privacy, or barrier fence, PVC is a choice
that should be thoughtfully considered.
